The close calls
These calls target replaceable lineup spots. Keep healthy weekly stars in place.
*Mayer is a start only if Brock Bowers is inactive. All calls are relative to similarly ranked options, not universal orders to bench a player.
Starts with a usable path to volume
Bryce Young · QB, Panthers at Falcons
STREAMYoung has a favorable streaming case because Carolina has a productive Young-to-Coker connection and Atlanta enters Sunday missing starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and multiple defensive contributors. The quarterback situation could also give Carolina more possessions. That last point is a possibility, not a projection.
Call: Start Young over a shaky one-week stream such as Malik Willis. Keep an established top-tier starter ahead of him.
Rhamondre Stevenson · RB, Patriots vs. Steelers
PPR RB2Stevenson caught five passes in the opener and handled most New England backfield carries while TreVeyon Henderson was out. Henderson practiced in full this week, so do not project the same carry share. The receiving role still gives Stevenson a sturdier PPR floor than backs who need a touchdown to pay off.
Call: Start as an RB2 or flex in PPR; lower expectations if Henderson takes back a substantial share.
Jalen Coker · WR, Panthers at Falcons
FLEXCoker is a better bet than a touchdown-only breakout chase. He has remained useful across games dating to late 2025, and his two-score Week 1 makes him a reasonable flex against Atlanta. Do not project another two touchdowns; the case is for repeatable targets and an active role.
Call: Start in the flex over low-volume receivers, especially in PPR. Confirm he remains active before kickoff.
Michael Mayer · TE, Raiders at Chargers
CONDITIONAL STARTMayer drew seven targets in Week 1 while Brock Bowers was sidelined. Bowers is listed doubtful with a knee injury, making Mayer a sensible tight-end stream if Bowers is ruled out. A surprise Bowers return would materially change Mayer's route and target outlook.
Call: Start Mayer only after the Raiders' inactive list confirms Bowers is out. Keep a late-window backup available if you plan to wait.
Players to move behind safer alternatives
Malik Willis · QB, Dolphins at 49ers
SITWillis needed a rushing touchdown to rescue his Week 1 fantasy total. San Francisco held the Rams to seven points in its opener. His legs preserve upside, but the passing floor makes him a risky one-quarterback start.
Pivot: Bryce Young is our preferred stream where available.
Tony Pollard · RB, Titans vs. Eagles
SITPollard split work with Tyjae Spears in Week 1 as Tennessee struggled to move the ball. Eight touches are too thin a base to chase against Philadelphia when you have a back with a clearer receiving or goal-line role.
Pivot: Prefer Stevenson in PPR or another back with a more stable workload.
Quentin Johnston · WR, Chargers vs. Raiders
SITEven after Ladd McConkey exited the opener, Johnston managed six targets and a quiet fantasy day. McConkey's availability is a separate injury check, but an uncertain target bump alone is not enough to make Johnston a dependable Week 2 flex.
Pivot: Favor Coker or another receiver with a clearer recent target trend.
Kyle Pitts · TE, Falcons vs. Panthers
SITPitts drew one target in the opener. Atlanta has ruled Penix out and confirmed Cooper Rush will start again. Pitts can rebound, but the available evidence does not justify treating him as an automatic tight-end start this week.
Pivot: Mayer if Bowers is inactive; otherwise choose a healthy tight end with a steadier route and target role.
Sunday checklist
- Check the official NFL injury report and each team's inactive list, normally released about 90 minutes before kickoff.
- Keep late-game players in the flex spot when possible. Mayer's Raiders play in the 4:05 p.m. ET window.
- Compare these calls against your actual alternatives; one-week matchup edges should not displace a healthy elite player.
